Exa to connect Italy’s data hubs with new Ultranet fibre route
17 March 2025European fibre network operator Exa Infrastructure has signed an agreement with HGM’s Italian telecommunications subsidiary Ultranet to build a new 175-kilometre fibre route between Milan and Genoa. The link will serve to substantially enhance connectivity between Milan, described as Italy’s leading technology hub, and Genoa, an increasingly popular landing point for subsea cables, said the partners.
The project also includes an extension of Exa’s Genoa Metro network to connect all existing cable landing stations, including Lagaccio, Equinix and Genoa Open CLS. Exa added that it will be in a position to offer an open landing platform for submarine cables and five distinct routes out of Genoa when the new link is completed.
London-headquartered Exa owns 155,000 kilometres of fibre network across 37 countries while Milan-based Ultranet has a backbone network spanning over 12,000 km and currently reaching more than 20 percent of the Italian population across metropolitan areas and business parks.
